Description:
GEN-S131: Support in the learning and application of self-assessment and study skills for students new to higher education.
LEARN005: Learning Community (8-Credit Combo: ACES 101, GEN-S 131) This two-part course explores the opportunities and challenges faced by the everyday American. With a focus on self-exploration and redefining what it means to be 'powerful' and 'successful', you will examine those overlooked voices in the American experience so that you can better understand and reflect on your own ambitions and identity. What kind of power lies in the everyday? How can you resurrect and learn from the stories of ordinary people who were considered unimportant, those whose contributions were dismissed and buried? By bridging the past with the contemporary moment, you will take charge of your own story by becoming more aware of the environment and issues that help to shape your American life.
ACES 101: This course will introduce students to key concepts, methods, and questions about what it means to do American Culture & Equity Studies as a field of study. Emphasis will be given to the changing social constructions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, citizenship, and ability in cultural texts such as video games, literary worlds, feminist pornography, visual culture, and television. Students will investigate the effects of these categories and cultural representations in their own lives and in different communities. The class will position critical readings alongside popular media in order to examine interrelationships between cultural identity, aesthetics, power, and privilege.

Prerequisites:*
ACES 101: Completion of ENGL& 101 with a grade of 2.0 or above is strongly recommended.
